This year, our colleague, Norbert Orgován, has been selected for the final 50 out of more than 1,000 applicants.

Norbert started his career as a researcher in the interdisciplinary field of biophysics. He used approaches based on physical phenomena or applied ideas rooted in physics to investigate biological systems. Specifically, his main focus area was label-free optical biosensors used to study cell attachment, a fundamental biological process essential for the formation of multicellular organisms, cell-cell communication, immune processes, metastasis development, and much more. During his three-year-long PhD studies, he authored 16 articles and 2 book chapters in peer-reviewed international scientific journals.

“After a while, I could not help but feel that despite my excellent and envied scientific achievements, I was stuck and was not contributing to the advancement of science and to a greater good of society in a way that would satisfy me. Considering time as my scarcest resource, I have always felt the urge to re-evaluate how and where I could improve, achieve, and create the most in a given time frame. 18 months ago, I came to the conclusion that it was not in the academic career anymore,” Norbert explains.

When deciding to change careers, he barely knew anything more about Sigma Technology than the information available on the internet, and still, he did not apply anywhere else. “Remarkably, it all turned out to be as good as it could get,” he says. “I have become as motivated and ambitious in the company of my colleagues at Sigma Technology as never before. That was, of course, not the first time I happened to be surrounded by smart, interesting, and open-minded people; nevertheless, all the new friendships, the new environment, and challenges shaped and improved me much more directly than ever before.”

He started his career at Sigma Technology as an information engineer. Later, at his request, he was given the opportunity to work as a test environment coordinator of 4G systems. In sports, he was inspired and driven by competition to complete the 100 km Kinizsi hike, then to race at the Long Distance Triathlon National Championship (Ironman). Meanwhile, he developed and started realizing multiple business ideas together with some of his colleagues. At the end of last year, he was selected as an ambassador of the Star for Life motivational and educational program.

“As a Star for Life ambassador, I help support the education of underprivileged children in the most underdeveloped region of South Africa. To be able to identify the most effective means of support, the most appropriate response to immediate needs, I strive to understand the local situation better. Additionally, I would also like to spread the word about Star for Life, and get more people to know and care about South Africa. This year, I am planning to cross the finish line of the Long Distance Triathlon National Championship as an ambassador—that is, in immaculate white tie and tails—and direct the media’s attention to the Star for Life program.”

On his own admission, Norbert’s achievements in the past 1.5 years can be credited, to a great extent, to the company and environment at Sigma Technology Hungary. “During our visit to South Africa, I grabbed every opportunity to emphasize to the students the importance of the people who surround you, the people you interact with on a daily basis. This can be a real game-changer.”

Norbert has high expectations of the 50 Talented Young Hungarians Program. He hopes to get to know 49 open-minded young people who are sensitive to local and global challenges and are willing to act upon them. He also believes that the mentors assigned to each talent would help the fellows unfold their full potential, and facilitate the social utilization of their ideas and pursuits.

“We are very proud of Norbert,” says Dóra Cseresnyés, COO of Sigma Technology Hungary. “He is a role model for all of us. Open to take on new challenges, meet new people, and devoted to change the world through his work and social activities.”
