Introduction

In the evolving landscape of electrification, battery management systems (BMS) are essential for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and longevity of electric vehicles. At Sigma, we support clients with critical development services in system and software design, testing, and functional safety integration. Our work enables faster development cycles, higher system reliability, and smoother regulatory compliance, particularly in areas where safety and system complexity intersect.

About the Client

Our client is a major player in the automotive and heavy vehicle industry, focusing on electrification and next-generation energy solutions. As part of their electric vehicle development, they required a robust battery management platform that could scale across models and meet stringent functional safety standards, including ISO 26262. The complexity of such systems demanded expert support in requirement management, embedded software development, and test automation.

Solution

Development Team
Sigma Technology’s In-House Development team supported the client by:

  • Handling requirement management for both system and software components, including writing and analyzing bi-directional requirements

  • Contributing to the design and architecture of the system and software modules for the BMS

  • Developing and implementing test methods for Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) environments

  • Creating test scripts in Python and CAPL to support automated validation workflows

Functional Safety Team:
The Functional Safety team worked alongside the client’s R&D organization to:

  • Guide and support the implementation of ISO 26262 standards

  • Moderate work products relevant to functional safety, including safety plans and documentation

  • Participate in cross-functional safety workstreams (e.g. STC), ensuring traceability and compliance throughout the development process

Results and Deliveries

Together, the Development and Functional Safety teams delivered:

  • A structured, testable, and scalable system foundation for the client’s battery management platform

  • Automated and repeatable testing infrastructure to accelerate validation cycles

  • Improved clarity and quality in the system and software requirements

  • Safety-aligned processes and documentation, enabling a smoother path toward ISO 26262 certification
