In late August, Sigma Technology arranged a series of events in Växjö, Stockholm, and Gothenburg, dedicated to strengthening cooperation between Kosovo and Sweden to promote joint growth and development in driving digitalization. Events gathered participants from the private sector, academia, and Dr. Shkëndije Geci-Sherifi, Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to Sweden.

We have had a chance to interview Dr. Shkëndije Geci-Sherifi after the event in Stockholm.

  • Kosovo’s IT sector has the potential to become a leading outsourcing market in Europe for international companies. What do you think is the secret (and driver) of the sector’s growth in Kosovo?

Kosovo has emerged as a dynamic and innovative player in the global tech landscape. Its success in the IT sector is marked by several key achievements and strengths that have positioned the country as a rising hub for technology and innovation. The IT sector is one of the fastest growing in the country, contributing increasingly to the national GDP. This growth has been driven by a young and dynamic workforce, a high level of digital literacy, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

Competitive labor costs and a strategic location make Kosovo an attractive outsourcing hub for European companies. Additionally, there is strong government and institutional support, as the government has recognized the importance of the IT sector and implemented policies and initiatives to support its growth. This includes investing in digital infrastructure, promoting tech education, and facilitating access to international markets. High internet penetration and successful tech startups further bolster Kosovo’s reputation as an outsourcing hub. Due to its geographical proximity to Western Europe, many international companies have established partnerships with Kosovo-based firms for software development, IT support, and other digital services.

  • What are some great examples of cooperation between the Swedish and Kosovo private sector that you see today?

Bilateral relations between Kosovo and Sweden have strengthened significantly in recent years, with a growing focus on economic diplomacy. This collaboration has led to the launch of the Nordic Economic Chamber in Prishtina, highlighting the trade potential in Kosovo. Key examples of economic cooperation include Ericsson Nikola Tesla’s  €15 million contract with Kosovo Telecom for network modernization, while from the private sector, a significant example is Volvo’s expansion into Kosovo with a new branch. Additionally, a major local company established the Lindex franchise in Kosovo through a Master Franchise Agreement with AB Lindex since 2015. The IT sector also showcases promising partnerships, with Swedish firms increasingly collaborating with Kosovo-based IT service providers for software development, customer support, and digital transformation. These partnerships not only deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions to Swedish companies but also drive the growth of Kosovo’s IT sector.

  • What advantages can Swedish industry get from cooperating with Kosovo?

Swedish industries can gain several advantages by cooperating with Kosovo. One of the primary benefits is access to a highly skilled and cost-effective workforce. This allows Swedish companies to enhance their competitiveness by reducing costs without compromising on quality. Another advantage is the cultural compatibility and ease of communication, as English is widely spoken in Kosovo, and there is a strong work ethic that aligns well with Swedish business values. The time zone proximity is also a practical benefit, enabling real-time collaboration and smoother project management. Moreover, by partnering with Kosovo, Swedish companies can tap into new markets and opportunities in Southeast Europe, leveraging Kosovo as a gateway to the region. This strategic cooperation can lead to innovation, improved services, and a strengthened presence in the European market.

  • What did you think of today’s event and discussions?

Today’s event was truly exceptional. The opportunity to mingle with IT professionals and entrepreneurs from both Kosovo and Sweden was invaluable. The event not only facilitated networking but also provided deeper insights into the potential of Kosovo as a growing hub for IT services and innovation. As Kosovo’s Ambassador to Sweden, I am filled with immense pride witnessing the collaboration between the young, talented representatives of Appbites from Kosovo and the esteemed Sigma Technology Group. Their collective efforts are paving the way for continued growth and mutual success. In particular, it was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and forward-thinking approaches that our very well integrated diaspora professionals brought to the table.  And of course, the Kosovo wine tasting presented brilliantly by Valbona, a successful Swedish-Kosovo entrepreneur, added a unique cultural touch to the event, offering a glimpse into Kosovo’s rich traditions and hospitality.

Overall, the event was a perfect blend of business and culture, strengthening the bonds between the two countries and opening up new avenues for collaboration.
