It’s a sunny afternoon in our Malmö office when I meet Nermin. He greets me with a warm, open smile—an attitude that plays a part in the success of the web development community he founded six years ago. Today, that community boasts over 600 members and continues to grow. At Sigma Technology Software Solutions, Nermin works as a full-stack developer, but his influence extends far beyond the office walls.

  • Nermin, when did your passion for programming begin?

It all started back when I was a kid growing up in Bosnia. My parents got me a Commodore 64. At the time, I wasn’t thinking about programming—I just wanted to play games and explore new technology. I remember once finding a shortcut in a game because the code wasn’t compiled. That small discovery sparked my curiosity. I began borrowing books on game development and learning how to program the Commodore.

Later, as a teenager in Sweden, I got my first PC and started exploring C++ and object-oriented programming. After studying natural sciences at gymnasium, I joined one of the first university programs focused on software development and even did my thesis at Ericsson.

  • That sounds like quite a journey. How did it lead to starting a web dev meetup?

I’ve had a varied path—working in front-end, testing, even starting my own company. That entrepreneurial phase was inspired by my father, who also ran his own business. I wanted to build a CMS with a strong focus on user experience, and that period pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way.

As for the meetup, it began with a simple idea: staying in touch with the incredible people I met throughout my career. You always say you’ll grab coffee, but it rarely happens. So I thought—why not create a space for that?

We were just eight people at the start, all guys back then. Now we’re over 600 members—and a much more diverse group, which makes me really proud.

  • That’s impressive growth. What’s the secret to keeping it going?

There were times I could’ve given up—especially after the pandemic hit—but persistence is part of who I am. What really matters to me is creating a warm, welcoming, and safe space. Anyone can join—whether you’re struggling with a coding problem, looking for a mentor, seeking career advice, or just wanting to hang out with fellow devs.

We welcome everyone: those passionate about web development or design, newcomers to the IT world, and experienced developers who want to exchange ideas, discuss trends, or even find potential partners.

  • It sounds like a true community. How did it grow to this size?

When people feel seen and valued, they naturally tell others. One friend recommends another, and suddenly, the circle keeps expanding. We started out meeting at Espresso House. Eventually, companies began offering us space. Now I’m really happy that we are hosting our meetups right here at Sigma Technology’s office at Stortorget.
